The loss of Jesus in the Temple

Scripture

Luke 2:46–51

After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.” He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

Meditation

For three days Mary and Joseph search for Jesus. When they find him in the Temple, Mary speaks plainly of their anguish. Jesus answers that he must be in his Father’s house. Luke tells us that they do not understand his words, and that Mary keeps these things in her heart.

Jesus returns to Nazareth and is subject to his parents. Yet Mary has glimpsed a mission that reaches beyond their family life. She treasures his answer while its meaning is still unfolding. Her faith holds together love for her Son, the pain of searching for him, and reverence for the Father’s will.

Seeking Christ

Prayer can become difficult, and familiar words can seem empty. We ask Mary to help us persevere in seeking her Son through Scripture, the sacraments and the ordinary practice of prayer. Pray also for parents searching for a missing child, and for families separated by estrangement. May those who are searching find help, and those who are lost be brought safely home.

Prayer for this sorrow

Beloved Mother, teach us to accept all our sufferings because of our sins and to atone for the sins of the whole world.

Follow with the Our Father once, the Hail Mary seven times, and Most Merciful Mother.
