Promises of Our Lady of Sorrows
Devotion to Mary’s sorrows carries a tradition of promises of consolation, spiritual help, and hope at the hour of death.
The seven traditional promises
These promises are traditionally attributed to Mary through Saint Bridget of Sweden. They concern honoring her sorrows daily with seven Hail Marys and meditation. This practice is distinct from the full Seven Sorrows Rosary, which has seven groups of seven Hail Marys.
The promises are summarized here in their usual order.
- Peace in the family. Mary promises peace to the families of those who honor her sorrows.
- Understanding the mysteries. They receive light concerning the mysteries of God.
- Consolation in suffering. She promises comfort in their pain and companionship in their work.
- Help with petitions. Requests are granted when they accord with her Son's will and the good of the soul.
- Spiritual protection. She promises help in spiritual battles and protection throughout life.
- Help at death. She promises visible help at the moment of death, when those devoted to her will see their Mother's face.
- Eternal joy. For those who spread devotion to her sorrows, the tradition promises forgiveness and passage directly into eternal happiness with Jesus and Mary.
The Seven Sorrows Rosary at Kibeho
Immaculée Ilibagiza's account describes promises of repentance, forgiveness, and a deeper understanding of the sins and weaknesses that need to change. It emphasizes praying from the heart and meditating on Mary's suffering with Jesus.
The promises attributed to Saint Bridget and the Kibeho account have different origins. Both invite conversion and are read in the light of the sacraments, including confession.
