Friday Rosary

Friday is usually a day for the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. They begin with Jesus praying in Gethsemane and continue through his Scourging, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, and Crucifixion. Friday's remembrance of his Passion gives this set its customary place in the week.

Remembering the Lord's Passion

The Sorrowful Mysteries supply the Gospel passages and reflections. At the Crucifixion, prayer for the dying and those who care for them may be especially close to mind. For someone who has died, the Rosary for the Dead includes Eternal Rest.

Friday prayer and penance

In the Latin Church, Friday has a penitential character. The rules for abstinence and other forms of penance depend on Church law and the provisions of the local bishops' conference; solemnities and individual circumstances can affect what applies.

The Rosary can accompany that penance. Whether another penitential practice fulfills a particular obligation is governed by the applicable norms. Your diocese or parish can explain them.

Today's Rosary shows feast-day adaptations to the usual Sorrowful assignment, including Joyful Mysteries on Christmas. The guide gives the prayers and their order.
