The first sorrow of Mary.

Scripture
Luke 2:34–35
Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
Meditation
Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the Temple in obedience to the Law. Simeon recognizes the salvation of Israel in this small Child. His blessing also carries a prophecy of rejection and a sword that will pierce Mary’s soul. The joy of the Presentation holds the first announcement of her sorrow.
Mary has already given her consent to God at the Annunciation. Now she learns more of what that consent will ask of her. She receives Simeon’s words with the same faith with which she received the angel’s message. Her Son belongs to the Father, and her love for him will bring her into his suffering.
Trust in God
A painful diagnosis or news about a child can make the future seem unbearable. Mary knows a mother’s fear for the one she loves. We ask her to help us place that fear before God and remain faithful in the duties of today. Pray for parents awaiting difficult news, and for those whose children face illness or danger.
Prayer for this sorrow
Beloved Mother Mary, whose Heart suffered beyond bearing because of us, teach us to suffer with you and with love, and to accept all the suffering God deems it necessary to send our way. Let us suffer, and may our suffering be known to God only, like yours and that of Jesus. Do not let us show our suffering to the world, so it will matter more and be used to atone for the sins of the world. You, Mother, who suffered with the Savior of the world, we offer you our suffering, and the suffering of the world, because we are your children. Join those sorrows to your own and to those of the Lord Jesus Christ, then offer them to God the Father. You are a Mother greater than all.
