Spiritual fruit: repentance and trust in God

The good news of the Kingdom

Jesus announces the Kingdom of God and calls people to repent and believe the Gospel. This third Luminous Mystery gathers a wide part of his ministry: his preaching, the forgiveness he offers, his healing of the sick, and the welcome he extends to those who come to him. His announcement asks those who hear it to change how they live.

Mark 1:14–15 gives a brief account of this proclamation. The parables and encounters that follow show what his announcement means. His welcome of sinners and his teaching about forgiveness offer particular moments to contemplate within this mystery.

The fruit of conversion and trust

Repentance begins with turning toward the mercy of God. We acknowledge the wrong we have done and ask for the grace to live differently. Repentance concerns our actions as well as our feelings. If we have harmed someone, making restitution or asking forgiveness may be part of the change that is needed.

Prayer can help us recognize a recurring fault and prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In confession, we acknowledge our sins to a priest and receive sacramental absolution. Someone returning after a long absence can ask a priest for help preparing.

Letting the Gospel shape the day

In the Our Father, we ask for God's Kingdom to come and his will to be done. Jesus' teaching gives that petition a practical direction: love of enemies, forgiveness, and care for the poor. A person we have stopped listening to may be one of those we remember in this decade.
