Litany of Loreto

The Litany of Loreto asks the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for us through a series of invocations. It is often prayed after the Rosary. The full text includes the opening petitions, every response and the closing prayer.

Mary and her Son

The litany addresses Mary by titles drawn from Scripture and the Church’s devotion. “Mother of Christ” names her relationship to Jesus. “Ark of the covenant” recalls the holy vessel of God’s presence among his people. The repeated response, “pray for us,” asks her intercession.

Some titles use images that are less familiar today. “Morning star” presents Mary as a sign of the coming of Christ; “Queen of peace” asks her prayers for the peace her Son gives. The Catechism describes Marian devotion in relation to Christ in §971.

The three invocations added in 2020

Pope Francis added Mother of mercy, Mother of hope, and Solace of migrants. The Congregation for Divine Worship announced them in its letter of 20 June 2020. These invocations form part of the English and Latin litanies.

After the Rosary

The litany can follow the usual closing prayers. A group alternates the invocations and responses, then prays the concluding petition. It can also be prayed on its own.

The English form follows the Holy See’s Rosary collection. The Latin form is presented separately; established local editions sometimes differ in their wording and order.
